Fylde Vandals 83 Kirkby Lonsdale 3’s 0
The magic of the Cup descended on the Woodlands on Saturday, well the Lighting and Building Services Plate actually, as Kirkby Lonsdale 3’s took the trip down the M6 to take on Fylde’s Vandals. As the headline suggests it was the usual mix of youth and experience for the home team’s squad of twenty. Unfortunately K/L were a couple of players light but were game ready come kick off time. The Vandals settled into this game pretty quickly and soon began what turned out to be a steady pattern of try scoring. K/L had some strong ball carriers and never took a backward step but the game was dominated by the Fylde boys.
Tom Hodgkins grabbed a hatrick with the other tries being scored by Tim Barrett (from further out than Adey Grey’s the other week!), Ben James, Cecil Holland, Jack King, Sean Whiteside, Tony “Rolo” Rawlinson, Tom Benstead, Ian Pearson, Richis Mason and Sean Townsend. Sean Whiteside added six conversions and Tom Hodgkins kicked three.
The try that deserves a little mention though is the one scored by the EPD himself. The initial break was made by Ben James and low and behold Sean Townsend found himself running a supporting line and “sprinted” in from miles out to score under the posts. Very nicely done indeed!
K/L never gave up or took a backward step and we appreciate the effort they made to travel down with just thirteen. All the best to those boys and we’ll see them again in a few weeks for the return league fixture. There was plenty of sunshine for the spectators to stand and watch the proceedings in so thanks to all of them.
Another big thanks goes to the club President Dave Walsh, who supplied the boys with a couple jugs of beer after the game.
Round 3 of the Plate competition sees the Vandals with another home fixture on February 25th against either Holmes Chapel 2’s or Old Bedians 3’s as their game on Saturday was postponed. Next week however it’s back to league action with Preston Grasshoppers 6th’s taking the short trip down the M55 so see everyone for that one.
