U18 Daily Mail Cup
AKS 1st XV 67 Holy Cross College, Bury 0
AKS 1st XV successfully made it through the first round of the Daily Mail Cup with a convincing performance against Holy Cross College.
The rain subsided for the afternoon and AKS sprang into action following the change of venue due to the inclement weather. From the first whistle AKS dominated the game, attacking with pace. Direct running from the forwards allowed Alex Vowles-Bradley to cross the line to put the home side ahead, and the try converted by Andy Walkden was the start of what was to come.
In a high scoring game AKS continued to dominate the match with numerous tries in the first half. The most impressive of these was finished by William Thompson. Matthew McLaughlin caught the ball from the kick off and popped to Matthew Patterson who jinked through the defence and off-loaded to the supporting forwards who inter-passed up the pitch. Alex Casey's powerful run continued the momentum of the move and a well-timed pass to William Thompson saw him then spring over the line to finish a well worked try. Half time score was 38-0.
In the second half Holy Cross fought bravely to knock back the oncoming attack, but were unable to retain possession in order to form many attacks of their own. A further four tries followed, the best of which saw great interplay between forwards and backs. The forwards attacked around the corner putting the Holy Cross team on the back foot, thus releasing the backs in the space on the open side of the pitch. Tom Lanigan, who had a fantastic game, supported the backs and received an off-load from Elliott Fackey. He attacked down the 5 metre channel, selflessly off-loading to Andy Walkden who crossed to make his personal points tally 22. The final score was 67-0.
Try Scorers: Andy Walkden (2), Matthew Cartmell (2), Alex Vowles-Bradley, Max Reid, Matthew Garrod, Oliver Mills, Elliott Fackey and William Jepson.
